Dog Day Out Program

🐶 DOG DAY OUT at Border Tails Rescue! 🐶
Looking for a fun way to spend a few hours and help a shelter dog? Join our Dog Day Out program—no volunteer experience or long-term commitment required!

How it works:

  • Stop by any day between 11:15am–3:00pm. Even on our closed days.

  • Pick a pup to take out for up to 5 hours, they must ALWAYS be back by 5 PM for dinner!

  • Go for a walk, hang out at home, grab a pup cup, or just relax together

  • After 3 successful trips, you can sign up for overnight “Slumber Pawtys”!

Important Rules:

  • You must be 18+ to participate—no exceptions. Anyone interacting with the pet must also be 18+. We are sorry that we can no longer accomodate children! Anyone in the group who is taking the dog out will be required to sign a waiver.

  • Dogs may not interact with any other pets (at home or outside)

  • No dog parks or off-leash play

  • Dogs must remain double-leashed at all times

  • No rolling windows down in the car

  • Please do not allow your dog to interact with any people besides you or those who signed the waiver at the shelter.

  • Call us if you have any issues on your outing.

Ideas for your outing:

  • Take a stroll in the forest preserve across the street

  • Visit a pet store for treats

  • Relax in your secure, fenced-in yard

  • Bring your pup to your (dog-friendly) office for the day

  • Chill on the couch at home

Note: Program availability depends on weather, dog availability, and staff coverage. Not all dogs are available for Dog Day Outs!
